Social Security Number delays

We continue to see delays of four to six weeks for applicants seeking social security numbers. (SSN) Immigrants arriving in the US with work visas and employment authorization are reminded to apply for the SSN right away.

Social Security Offices

To find a social security office near you, go to their website www.ssa.gov and click on “Find an office near you.” You may print out the SS-5 application form from the site. SSA advises people not to carry their social security card with them but to keep it in a safe place at all times.

Disability information

The SSA site also has a lot of information with regard to its disability payment programs including SSI and SSDI. Immigrants need to be sure they are eligible to apply before pursuing such an application.

New process announced by USCIS

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced it began accepting Premium Processing Service requests for Forms I-140 (Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker) filed on behalf of certain immigrant workers who are nearing the end of their sixth year in H-1B nonimmigrant status. If this applies to your case, discuss it with your attorney.

Free Legal Clinic

Irish immigrants met our attorneys for free one to one consultations at our monthly clinic at Bad Abbots last Tuesday evening. Our next clinic will be the first Tuesday August 5th at Bad Abbots.

Our thanks to immigration attorney Chris Lavery who answered questions on immigration and visas, and our ever reliable volunteer Neil Hurley who provided expertise on US citizenship applications. Call the IPC for help if you have questions in these areas.

LATE ALERT-IRISH AMONG THOSE DETAINED AT AIRPORTS.

This week we had a number of calls regarding Irish immigrants detained at US airports in Boston and Florida. Because of client confidentiality, no details can be released. However, Irish immigrants are reminded that they should carry evidence of lawful status with them if going to pick up relatives at airports and valid passports are now required as ID when traveling. If you have a question on these and other matters, call the IPC at 617-479-7404.
