Senior Notes

School vacation has concluded and everyone is back into the thick of their daily lives. Those of us who worked our way through last week were delighted with the quieter roads, (no school buses) and got a little lift from seeing actual groups of people young and old out and about on the streets again. It was like a breath of fresh air to feel the temperature above 0º, see the grass again, and wish farewell to the last bits of snow on the ground. However fleeting the change in weather pattern, there was a palpable sense of relief when we all gathered down at the Irish Cultural Centre for the monthly Mass and lunchtime social last Thursday.

A full house with many newcomers joining the party, nothing like good old word of mouth to bring in new friends. We enjoyed a lively and very pleasant afternoon. Fr. John said Mass and had a special ceremony for members of the community who are sick. Lunch always warrants a mention, a hearty concoction of ham, splendid apple and peach chutney, two varieties of spuds and my favorite, all the roasted winter vegetables you could manage. The coffee and tea pots runneth over, our crowd are fiends for the afternoon caffeine pick me up and of course Kilcommons Caterers are happy to oblige. Ron Cote and Dave Healy were the entertainers of choice for the afternoon, performing a variety of oldies, romantic love songs (Valentine’s has just passed) and a fine selection of Irish tunes. Enthusiastic dancers got to strut their stuff and managed to drag a couple of reticent Gingers Rogers out on the floor after some persuasion.
