God Wants us to Put Others First
There are times when we read the Gospels and think: what would it feel like to be part of that crowd listening to Jesus? Imagine being there when Jesus tells a story or gestures in your direction!
Would I understand the profound nature of what Jesus is saying? or would I miss the point entirely? Fortunately, we have the benefit of all four gospels, and the luxury of time to reflect.
The grain of wheat dying and bearing much fruit is one of our favorite examples. The whole purpose of Jesus’ death and resurrection was to make positive change in the way people relate to God, to one another, and to creation.
Has this event made a difference in our lives? How much fruit has resulted from the death of this single grain? Each act of kindness toward a loved one or a stranger is a step in the right direction. Every time a government enacts a policy that focuses on the well-being of communities and individuals, it moves us forward on the right path.
Even the smallest act of solidarity and support that we show for people around the world who are working for justice and liberation is another move forward.
As our Lenten journey nears its conclusion, may we profit from the gospels and our reflection, to “get the message” and work for a bountiful harvest.
