Senior Notes

Cora Flood

Long overdue words of thanks to Peigi Cloherty, Cait Graca and Jim Murphy all of whom are officers in Cumann na Gaeilge. The trio in conjunction with Maureen McNally came down to Canton for our monthly outing in May. They entertained and educated with a presentation as Gaeilge (in Irish) of songs, poetry and short stories. For the more physically active or braver souls Peigi led several sets on the dance floor. We were also joined by John Kearney, Tim O’Connell and friends from the Comhaltas Music School.

So what is Cumann na Gaeilge in Boston?

Irish Language Society

Cumann na Gaeilge i mBoston, The Irish Language Society, is a non-profit organization whose aim is to preserve and extend the use of the Irish language through education and cultural activities.  Courses in the Irish language are offered by the Cumann at several locations in the Greater Boston area, including the Irish Cultural Centre in Canton.  The Cumann operates independently and sometimes holds functions at venues other than the Cultural Centre.   A Céad Míle Fáilte, a cordial welcome, is extended to anyone with an interest in the Irish language to join in the pursuit of the Cumann's aims.

THE IRISH LANGUAGE

Some people are surprised to find that the Irish people have a language of their own. Gaeilge is the word for the language in Irish. It is not related to the English language anymore than English is related to Hungarian or Russian, Irish is a Celtic language of Indo-European origin, as are most of the Western European tongues. Motto: Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.

Brighton: just last Monday afternoon we said a sudden farewell to a faithful regular of our Cara Club. Anne (Healy) Flaherty, originally from Co. Mayo passed away quietly and quickly surrounded by family and friends. We will miss her gentle presence and interested enquiries in all our future gatherings. May she rest in peace.
