Praise the Shepherds generosity
Shepherds don’t get much time off. It’s a job that requires much energy and commitment. Sheep need to be watched constantly. Without someone’s watchful eye, they can get themselves into tight spots – from which they don’t always have the sense to get themselves out. Where one misguided sheep goes, others are likely to follow.
Being a shepherd is a hard and lonely job in many ways – even a lowly job. And yet, what a responsibility it is to be a shepherd. For sheep provided wool and milk and meat – things that keep prople warm and fed. Caring well for the sheep helps to keep them – and the community – healthy and safe.
It is easy to see Jesus as a shepherd. He gathers us around him. He protects us, cares for us, and saves us from our own stubbornness and foolishness. He makes us like down in green pastures. He restores our soul. He prepares a table for us.
In accepting to be our shepherd, Jesus gave up a lot; time with his friends and family, time alone, time to rest. Ultimately, he gave us his life. Each time we gather as a community for the Eucharist, we remember his incredible gift to himself and are thankful. We know that with the Lord as our shepherd, there is nothing we shall want. All we need to do is to listen to his voice and follow him.
