Senior Outreach Program
Senior Program Coordinator: Dorothy McCormack
Our Senior Outreach Program aims to reduce social isolation that often comes with the death of a spouse or loved one. It was set up in response to the very tragic demise of two elderly Irish people in their own homes eight years ago. Sadly these deaths were not noticed immediately which alerted the community to the existence of an issue around isolation. Our weekly social gatherings aim to reduce social isolation, encourage engagement with others on a regular basis as well as ensure a more positive healthy aging experience.
Each week we host the following meet-ups for seniors which all take place from 1-3 PM:
Cara Club: Veronica B. Smith Senior Center, 20 Chestnut Hill Ave, Brighton on Mondays.
Cafe Eireann: All Saint's Church, 209 Ashmont Street, Dorchester Center on Wednesdays.
Crossroads Cafe: St. John Chrysostom, 4750 Washington Street, West Roxbury on Thursdays.
We also offer visits to home bound elders in their own homes, nursing homes and assisted living communities, and we match volunteers from the client’s homeland for home visits, companionship, and conversation.
We arrange a monthly Mass & Luncheon with musical entertainment hosted at the Irish Cultural Centre of New England (ICCNE) in Canton, which includes transportation to the event. We also organize quarterly day trips and outings. In addition, we provide information and advocacy services, including assistance with Irish and British pensions, Medicare issues, and visits abroad.
Other services can include, but not limited to:
- Irish Pension application forms
- Friendly Home & Hospital visits by the friendly home visit pastoral care team
All services are confidential.
