When you return to Ireland, you will need a Personal Public Service (PPS) number to access social welfare benefits and public services in Ireland. A PPS number is always 7 numbers followed by either one or 2 letters.
If you cannot find your PPS number, contact Client Identity Services in the Department of Social Protection. You can:

This option is available if an Irish passport has been expired for less than 5 years, or is due to expire in the next 12 months. The passport renewal process is entirely an online process. The portal for the online application is available at ireland.ie/passports
Requirements to submit an online passport renewal application:
Current Irish passport number
Email Address
Debit or Credit Card to pay the renewal fee (90 Euro for adults / 25 Euro for minors)
Digital photo (this can be taken with a smartphone/ipad and uploaded to the online application)
If a passport is due to expire in more than 12 months, the current passport must be mailed to the Passport Office in Ireland.
*Passports that are over 5 years expired are considered first time passports*

The Foreign Birth Register allows the descendants of Irish born individuals who have moved abroad to claim Irish citizenship. If each generation registers their birth before the next generation is born, then Irish citizenship can be passed from parent to child.
